LOCAL GROCERY SPOTTED ON FOLDING TABLE

An extremely small beginning. Possibly the beginning of something much bigger.

A POSSIBLE FUTURE · NOT A REPORT OF AN EVENT

WASECA — It started with a farmer and two crates of vegetables.

Someone brought coffee. Someone else brought soup.

A neighbor who couldn't make it got a bag delivered to their door.

A little girl drew a picture of the whole thing, and somebody put it in the newspaper.

By the end of the afternoon, six strangers knew each other's names.

None of this has happened.
But it could.

There's been talk around town about starting a community-owned grocery store. It's a good idea. It takes money, people, planning, and patience.

But what if we started with a table?

What if, instead of waiting until we had everything, we tried doing something with what we already have?

Maybe you grow tomatoes. Maybe you have a pickup truck. Maybe you know somebody who makes wonderful bread.

Maybe you're lonely.

Maybe you're hungry.

Maybe you just like the sound of six strangers becoming neighbors.
