WINTER WARMTH 001 · WASECA / SOUTHERN MINNESOTA · 28 OCT 2026
The firewood
is already out there.
Some households heat with wood. Some neighbors have seasoned firewood. Others have a storm-damaged tree, an empty trailer, a storage shed, or a skill to offer. What if we built the safe, local, accountable crossing between them?
AN IDEA, NOT AN ACTIVE FIREWOOD BANK. No donations, deliveries, volunteers, tree services, school projects or partners have been accepted through this page. Do not post addresses, household heating status or private requests here. This page does not collect or send data.
01 / TWO VERY DIFFERENT CLOCKS
Heat this winter.
Wood for next winter.
READY NOW · VERIFY EVERY BUNDLE
Dry, seasoned, legal-to-move wood.
Already split and dried firewood is the only plausible immediate donation source. A moisture meter reading below 20% is best; the wood still needs legal source, species, pest movement, receiving-site and appliance checks.
Immediate shortage? Start with existing energy-assistance providers and authorized fuel vendors. Our unverified drafts are not emergency dispatch.
BUILD FOR 2027 / FUTURE HEATING SEASON
Dead trees, fresh logs and surplus wood.
Newly cut wood generally needs many months of seasoning; a standing dead tree is not guaranteed ready to burn. Qualified insured arborists or trained crews must assess hazardous tree work, and landowners must authorize any removal.
Recover safe local wood, split and stack it appropriately, test after drying, and carry lawful inventory into future winters.
02 / IMMEDIATE RELIEF FIRST
Someone needs heat?
Don't give them a promise.
Give them an existing route that can actually process heating assistance while we build the firewood network.
Minnesota Energy Assistance Program
The state says eligible households can receive help with bills and payments to fuel providers—including wood. Application deadline: May 31, 2027. On October 26, 2026, the Department of Commerce announced approximately $111 million in federal funding for the heating season.
Official Minnesota program ↗Waseca area: Minnesota Valley Action Council
507-345-6822 · Energy Assistance and local referral office for Waseca, Blue Earth and adjacent counties. Its current website reports a funding timing caveat that may lag the state's October 26 announcement: confirm current payment and emergency availability by phone.
MVAC Energy Assistance ↗
Urgent home-heating or safety situation: contact a qualified local assistance provider or emergency services as appropriate. Do not rely on wet/unknown firewood, improvised heaters, or an unsafe wood-burning appliance. The site does not accept emergencies or dispatch volunteers.
03 / THE COMMUNITY WEAVE
One tree is not a delivery.
01Notice
Wood supply, paid tree work, available dry stock, storage space, fuel vendors, or a need recognized by a trusted assistance organization.
02Classify
Ready-this-winter fuel versus green wood for a future season. Never claim a dead yard tree is heat-ready.
03Verify
Tree ownership, professional tree care, species and moisture, pests/quarantine, vehicles, insurance and steward approval.
04Match
Local nonprofit or authorized fuel provider receives a bounded offer privately and may accept or refuse independently.
05Deliver
Only approved, lawful and appropriately insured handling, with recipient consent; no unsafe volunteer tree work.
06Witness
Record only the real result: amount verified, a completed authorized delivery, a refusal, or an unresolved problem.
04 / WHO COULD SHARE THE WORK?
Lots of useful roles.
No forced partnership.
Churches
Willing volunteer coordinators, dry storage, meals and neighbor care—without faith requirements for aid.
Colleges
Consented adult service-learning in inventory, moisture testing, mapping, logistics, energy efficiency, accessibility or public-interest design.
Schools
Optional school-approved environmental education or communications only, with safeguarding. No student tree felling, chainsaw operation, delivery to strangers or access to beneficiary records.
Tree professionals
Licensed or insured as applicable; assess hazardous trees, material health and proper handling. No assumption of donated labor.
Community organizations
Independently screen and coordinate fuel need, distribute relief information, and control private recipient details.
Neighbors and growers
Voluntary safe local surplus, equipment, money for authorized fuel vendors, and covered dry storage.
05 / FIELD CARD · LOCAL ONLY
Start with one
responsible offer.
Create an unsigned, unverified, public-safe draft on your own device. This does not put anyone in touch, request a delivery, or publish anyone's property or household information.
06 / STOP-LINES · NO EXCEPTIONS
Don't move pests.
Don't move danger.
MN DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTUREEmerald ash borer and other quarantines restrict moving uncertified hardwood firewood out of regulated areas. Favor local supply. Use certified heat-treated wood for cross-quarantine movements only when labeling and current rules permit.
Firewood movement rules ↗US ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCYBurn clean, dry, seasoned untreated wood. Under 20% moisture is best. Maintain wood stoves and chimneys; install working smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms. Smoke affects neighbors and people with respiratory conditions.
Wood heat safety ↗STATE FOREST / PUBLIC LANDDo not assume downed wood belongs to volunteers. Personal-use wood taken home from a Minnesota state forest requires a permit, and state park firewood collection is generally prohibited.
Minnesota DNR rules ↗
No personal data storage or submission, no public-address map, no donor-to-recipient direct matching, no underage dangerous tool use, no promises of winter-ready wood, no assumed cross-county transport permission.
07 / THE WASECA FIELD PILOT · PUBLIC LEADS, NOT PARTNERS
Seven real doors.
Zero permissions assumed.
Instead of inventing a new case-management system, start by asking the organizations already doing local relief what is missing. These are public-source research contacts. Nobody has agreed to participate, provide firewood, manage recipients or offer space.
Current program caveat: Minnesota Valley Action Council's own Energy Assistance page currently says applications are available, but its funding is unavailable and expected sometime in November 2026. The state funding announcement does not itself guarantee payment availability. For heating emergencies, contact the provider directly. Do not substitute this page for an emergency service.
Copy one respectful question
The script asks whether a need exists and whether an authorized person wants to discuss it. It makes no promises. No messages are sent from this page.
Before anyone says yes
If a steward says no, stop. If the wood fails inspection or movement rules, HOLD. No donation is better than an unsafe one.
Public sources editorially checked 2026-10-28. Review their current details before contact; source inspection is not proof of an operating firewood program.
